Equine Facilitated Therapy at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch

A different setting for meaningful work.

Therapy alongside rescue horses.

Equine facilitated psychotherapy brings mental health therapy outdoors at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch. We may talk, but we can also notice what happens in real time as you observe or interact with a horse: how you approach connection, respond to uncertainty, communicate a need, or recognize a boundary.

This is a space to explore anxiety, relationships, confidence, trust, grief, and life changes. Sessions are guided by your therapy goals and take place on the ground. You don’t need to ride, know anything about horses, or even touch one to take part.

What this might look like

  • Boundaries & communication

Notice what happens when you need space, want to connect, or try to communicate clearly without words.

  • Anxiety & confidence

Practice slowing down, making choices, and responding to uncertainty in a supportive setting.

  • Relationships & connection

Explore patterns in how you relate to others, while paying attention to what feels comfortable, difficult, or surprising in the moment.

The horses at Zuma’s have stories of their own. We approach them as living partners with preferences and boundaries, never as tools expected to perform or carry our emotions. Their comfort and choice matter throughout the session.

Being in relationship with rescue horses can invite reflection on trust, patience, and mutual respect. We hope the time we spend with them is positive for the horses, too. Their wellbeing guides what we ask of them, and sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply notice and give them space.

What a session can involve?

We’ll begin with what you want to work on and what feels comfortable around horses. A session might include observing a horse, spending quiet time nearby, grooming, leading, or reflecting on an interaction. We’ll connect what you notice at the ranch to the concerns and relationships in your everyday life.

There is no required activity and no pressure to have a particular experience. We’ll adjust the session to your goals, your comfort, and the horse’s needs.
